Anyone know of any data erasing software, that is accessible by using either jaws or window eyes?

What data are you trying to erase? Do you mean the whole hard drive?

Yes, I want to erase all traces of files, not reformat.

Eraser is good. So is restoration, though restoration takes a while, because the nmain purpose for it is to restore data. However, I would recommend Eraser because it is very JAWS friendly. I would recommend using the 7-time erase. This iwll rewrite the erased file with nonsensacle data 7 times, becsuse any data is recoverable unless it is rewritten on. I mean, the space from which the file was erased has to be written on.

where can you find this program?

IEHater, thanks so much. I was looking at that program, but I wanted to know if anyone here had any experience with it, or other programs like it.I just want to make my data as unrecoverable as possible, as I am going to get another computer, and pass this one on.Eraser can be found

Couldn't you just erase the files, clear your recycle bin and then defrag your disk?

I would think that would be sufficient for most uses, unless you are donating your computer to the CIA or homeland security.

Tbh, unless you think there going to try to find your data, just a format should be enough: i mean yeah, i've got stuff of computers on ebay before (the last i t teacher we had gave me a demo of this) and even though they have formated, you can still get stuff off.
But even if they are really techy, would they have a reason to try and get it? I do think that a format would be adviceable, for example you have all your stored passwords, and if you and the next computers owner use the same sites, you might be logged in automaticly.
A format will also make the computer faster than it is now, even if you remove everything you can find.
If you still wanna distroy your data, use killdisk from killdisk.com, the free version is fine.
Note that you will have to get sited help to run this once you've made a cd or floppy of it and that it will format your harddrive, but it is good.
I can guide you through any part of this excluding the sited part.

Just go out and buy a degausser if you want to be really secure. lol

Post 15 by SilkySarah (Veteran Zoner) on Wednesday, 25-Oct-2006 0:36:56

Lol Blake! It's not quite that serious. Almost, but not quite. :)

Ben, thanks. I don't think I'll format, as I would be the one that would have to go through the annoyance of a reinstall.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

If all else fails, a good strong electro magnet might work.

that's basically what a degausser is. lol

lol does the magnet get rid of everything? If not you'd be getting hal.dll and ntldr errors all the time. Could be a really quick way of getting rid of some of my more... personal data.
Tbh a reinstall isn't really an annoyence as long as you've got drivers and stuff and it will benefit the next user quite a bit aswell but i guess its alright for me to say that what with me having a xp dvd with an unattended install with my drivers along with speech slipstreamed into the install.
Perhaps you could look at the ccleaner topic a few down from yours, by the sound of it, this'll increase the speed of your computer even if you don't format.
